POKER HAND #92

EMBARASSED BY MY PLAY: I have let a few bad beats hurt my confidence recently. I've been struggling with my no-limit play. I think I've been attempted to make too many complicated moves. I've done well in small-money satellites because I'm good at surviving to make the money, but I tend to think of amassing profits a little too straightforwardly. Perhaps some live play would sharpen my game, as I've been an online adherent for the past several months.

POKER HAND #91

PLAYING A MADE HAND: This is a situation that came up recently and I wanted to ask what people think of my decision.

I have $50 in the SB and pick up the Candyman special, 8-8. I raise 5 and get called by the BB who has about $38. The flop comes 8-5-3 rainbow. The BB had been calling preflop raises and stealing it after the flop all day so I bet 5 and he immediately reraises to 15.

Now I was faced with a decision, go over the top for his last $18 or call and try to suck the rest out on the turn. I decided to go all-in and after 10 seconds, he folded. Afterward, I questioned my choice because had I called, he would have been pot committed and a huge dog. The only conceivable way he could have beat me was if he had a higher pair and then made trips on the turn or river.

This was an interesting situation to me because going all-in was actually safer than just calling. Because he only had $18 left, there was a good chance he would call and I would probably win, if he folds, I net $20+. If I just called, and the turn is higher than an 8 and he goes all-in, I am faced with a decision and the point of hold ‘em is to make your opponent make decisions for his entire stack is it not?

My opinion is that I probably could have made more on the hand, but given the amount in the pot, the relatively small amount he had left in his stack and the chance that he would call my all-in raise without seeing the turn, made going all-in the right move. But what do you think?

BROWSING THROUGH THE CARDPLAYER FORUMS: Spent a little time browsing the Cardplayer poker forum today, and it's a neat place. Decent enough discussion and maybe worth checking out.

Anyway, someone mentioned that they use Poker Tracker, which helps track your game and provides really cool statistics on how you are playing.

Frankly, I'm pretty obsessive about my game as it is, so I don't know if it's the best idea to throw more stats in there. The more I play, the more scared I get. Better not to know what I'm up against goes my thinking at this point.

But I will probably take it up at some point. Will someone check it out and tell me if it helps them?

Now, I deeply thought about whether or not to call on the flop here. I was either going all the way, or calling. I felt raising was the wrong move. If I raised, I'd probably be called only if I was beat. I liked my hand OK, but I deeply feared a higher pocket pair. My first clue was that he didn't reraise preflop after somebody else raised. My second clue was my note about this player. It read: "This guy is a tricky player. He bluffs and can probably be bluffed." I read him for a bluff, and I immediately bet the turn and took it down, as you can see.

INTERESTING THREAD: There's an interesting thread about online poker over at Daniel Negreanu's Full Contact Poker website.

Thus far I have only played the $25 NL and PL hold 'em tables. I have found the pot-limit tables a little better for my money, just for psychological reasons.

Calling big bets and making them isn't as easily done in pot-limit, which means when I have a hunch about a hand I have a few betting rounds before I put too much money in to decided where to put my money. I was getting into too many questionable situations and PL has helped me.

If anyone can recommend better places to make money on partypoker, I'm open to suggestions.

POKER HAND #83

TILT: I watched the long-awaited new ESPN poker drama, "Tilt" tonight. After viewing the preview special and rewatching "Rounders" recently, I had high hopes for the show. Not based on "Rounders," because that movie is pretty dumb. I hate all these dumb scenes where the guy is like "raise" and the other guy is like "re-raise."

But in the preview special, one of the creators was like, "Now that everybody knows more about poker, we can do a lot more." OK, I thought, that's what this would be about.

Instead a mind-bafflingly bad show. As a reader of lots of stories about poker, I can think of tons of ones that interest me a lot more than this. Stories that interest me a lot more, and don't cast a bad light on the game. This movie made high-stakes poker look like the movie "Casino." It paints a horrifying image of a corrupt high stakes gambler played by Michael Madsen.

If you know a lot about some of the great players in poker, and the amazing experiences they went through, it's hard to be interested in these kinds of unrealistic plot lines.

If I were debuting a poker show, I would build it around a mentor and a young gun. Before the show ended, there's no way I could exhaust the number of great poker stories just told by Doyle Brunson. Then you have a guy like Stu Ungar, who lived a far more entertaining life than any of the people here. His story would be tons better than the stale dialogue and crappy plotlines exhibited here.

Then the most obvious of plotlines is thrown right in your face -- Mike Matusow, a major tournament player busted by the cops for helping an undercover cop buy cocaine. How do you screw that one up?

One of my favorite players, Daniel Negreanu, has an interesting life story and certainly lives a fascinating life. It's just amazing to me that you have this weird people in the poker world and the master poker player you present in the show is just a gangster version of another Madsen character from a Tarantino movie.

Like the co-creator said, people know a lot more about poker. I would have shown the hole cards of characters onscreen and cooked up really dramatic situations. You can't follow along a hand if all that the action is concerned with is whether a guy is bluffing or not.

At least they are building up to a World Championships-like situation. With that said, I don't see how this is going to get any better. Huge thumbs down for "Tilt."

POKER HAND #81

JACKS:
To me, no hand exemplifies the frustration of playing hold em like the JJ. You look down at what appears to be a monster hand, but if you get any callers and the flop has an A,K or Q, you are suddenly on the defensive.
Because of this, the preflop betting is the most important round when holding JJ. JJ is a hand I never would limp with because you have to make players fold hands like K10, or suited K or Q high hands. At the same time, you don't want to raise too much because then you are most likely only getting called by the fearsome foursome (AA, KK, QQ, AK) of which your best hope becomes a coin flip against AK.

Yesterday on Party Poker, I picked up JJ twice within 5 minutes and it ruined me. The first time I was in the SB with about $40, the guy on the dealer button raises $6 and I called. The BB then reraises to $20, the dealer reraises all-in for 60. Now I have the choice to call my remaining $34 most likely against two players as the I am sure the BB will call. I have to assume both players have "fearsome foursome" hands so I unhappily fold. BB calls, the flop, turn and river are all blanks and they both flip over AK for a split pot! I would have tripled up. Maybe if I was against one player I would have called, but the chances that they both had AK (only making me a bigger favorite) were too small (not that I even considered it).
Three hands later, I pick it up again and have a vision of myself 2 minutes from then, closing my computer slowly and walking away trying to maintain some calm. The guy who was the dealer in the previous hand raises 6, I call, flop comes blanks, he raises 15, I go all in for 12 more, he calls, flips over Aces and that was that. I would say I played this hand poorly, although I was out of position and in his shoes, I could see myself making that same bet with AK instead of AA.
Any comments on how you think of JJ would be much appreciated as the hand now has me completely baffled.

POKER HAND #80

LETTER FROM GILAD MUTH: Friend of pokerhand.blogspot.com Gilad Muth writes of his experience playing at Foxwoods during winter break...

So break has been pretty nice. As you probably know, I've been spending some quality hours at Foxwoods and it has been really great. It is a lot of fun to play with some of those guys, especially when you're in a hand with them because they do a pretty good job showing you when they have the better hand. Saves you a lot of money ;)

After about 2 hours at the woods, I suffered a bad call from this maniac because I thought I had a good read on him. Oh well. Anyway, my stack is a little below 100 and I pick up cowboys in middle position. There is one limpers and I make it 15 to go. Only one callers in the small blind. I know the guy isn't that great, so I figure that I'm going to get some money out of him.

Flop comes Q J 5. He checks and I bet about 20. He calls. I get a bit scared that he might have hit a set, especially considering that he called from the small blind. Probably jacks or queens, but then again, maybe he would ahve reraised me preflop with that hand....this is foxwoods afterall. Turn comes a blank and he checks to me. Now I know that he doesn't have anything so I move all-in and he quickly calls. I get scared for a bit because of the quick call but am relieved when he flips over A 10. While he doesn't hit an ace on the river, another king hits (which does give me a set) but gives him broadway. I guess what's worse then being burned by a 3-outer is being burned by a 2-outer.

I proceed to mumble under my breath about how bad of a call it was and that in the long run I'll get that guys money. The guy sitting to my right laughs at me and is like "Sorry that's how poker works." I tried to explain to him the odds, but he laughed in my face after telling me how he saw one guy get pocket aces 3 times out of 5. Well I guess if those are his ideas of probability, then he is welcome at my table any day.

I'm a little pissed off about the way I played it, because I probably could have lost less money (or there was at least a chance of that. Instead I dropped $50 on one hand. I can't get too angry at myself, but I should have considered each of my decisions Phil Ivey-style. Geez.

I'M ONLINE: After some credit card issues, I finally got to play my first bout of online poker with my own money. Yay!

I chose the SN snowman415. The snowman represents my new favorite hand, 8-8. I chose that hand because I've never won a big pot with it, and I felt my luck was about to change. I will play it superstituously and religiously from now on.

I'm now up $20 from my initial entry of $100. I busted some folks and generally played tentatively. My first crucial laydown came in this hand. I'd appreciate someone's thoughts on this.

Here I picked up K-Js on the button and I just limped in with this trouble hand. The flop came down:

** Dealing Flop ** : [ Jd, 6h, 3c ]
SkyInTheSea checks.
jpena checks.
cojacked bets (3)
rentaprog folds.
snowman415 calls (3)
SkyInTheSea folds.
jpena calls (3)

Here's where I think I probably made my mistake. By raising I shut out a 6 when there's not too much else on the board.

** Dealing Turn ** : [ 6d ]

jpena checks.
cojacked checks.
snowman415 bets (4)
jpena raises (10) to 10
cojacked folds.
snowman415 folds.

I decided to represent a 6 here. I figured a guy might fold a hand like A-J. When he raised, I went in the tank. I had to think he had a 6, especially since he might have just called with a hand like A-J. Or, he might have gotten lucky and flopped two pair. Either way, I assumed I was beat and through the hand away. Did I play this one real badly?
